We bought a little potty for Lucy months and months ago, just to let her to get used to it, so she wouldn't be afraid of sitting on it when the time came. We kept it in the living room for a while, and she would sometimes use it as a chair. Ha. Then, we moved it into her bathroom. Again, just to have it around, for her to see and sit on it if she felt like it. From time to time she would express interest in sitting on it (with her diaper and clothes), but when we asked if she wanted to take off her diaper, she would quickly answer, "No," and then move on to something else. We didn't push. More recently, she started to sit on her potty briefly before bath time, but nothing would come of it.
She has two potty-related books, which I must say, are a couple of her favorites. First came the simply entitled, Potty. It's a simple book, not much explanation of anything, but cute, and she loved it. I wanted to get her a book with a little more information that she might be able to understand, so I bought her Once Upon a Potty. This has been a story time favorite ever since.
We haven't been actively trying to get her potty trained, since we're not in any big rush here, and also we've heard it doesn't usually happen until closer to three years old anyway. I'm also a firm believer in that the child will let you know when he or she is ready, so if you try to start before then, it will just be a frustrating, prolonged process for everyone involved. And since we're not in any big rush, we haven't been worrying about it at all yet.
Well, tonight, to our amazement, it happened! All by herself, just before bath time, once she walked into the bathroom for her bath, she sat down on her potty (as she has been doing, evidently). All I heard from the kitchen was a very enthusiastic, albeit somewhat flabbergasted, "You pee'd!" from the bathroom. What?? I immediately went to the bathroom to see Lucy standing up, a little like a deer in the headlights, and pee in the potty! Yup! She pee'd! In her potty! Without anyone saying anything to her about it beforehand! She just sat on there and did it, like she'd been doing it for years! I think we startled her with our excitement, but hello- it was SO exciting! We hooted and hollered and made a fuss about how great it was and what a big girl she was, and then and confusion/fear about what had just happened seemed to disappear, and she seemed to be as proud of herself as we were of her. Then we showed her how use toilet paper, and as per Prudence and her mom in Once Upon a Potty, we emptied the potty into the toilet, said, "Bye-bye, pee," flushed it down, and she washed her hands.
Big girl!! :)
We realize this very well may not happen again for a while, but it was cool that it happened this first time. Yay!
On the opposite end of the excitement spectrum, we just found out that a kid in our mommy & me class came down with roseola a few days ago. UGH! Apparently, the incubation period is 1-2 weeks, so all we can do now is go about our normal life and wait and see whether Lucy ends up developing any symptoms. I repeat, UGH! So, let's hope these next couple weeks go by quickly, and she never develops any symptoms, because roseola doesn't sound fun at all. And with Lucy just recovered from a stuffy, runny nose last week and Brian still nursing a cold himself, (and me Emergen-Cing like crazy), I am not in the mood for roseola to strike, too.
But to end on a high note: Yay, pee! :)
