1 Year Old!

Happy Birthday, Lucy!

You are one year old today!  I just typed that, yet I still can't believe it!  You were born a whole year ago today!  We were so overwhelmed with happiness when you were finally born, and we couldn't stop looking at you.  You were so tiny and adorable!

Over the past year you've changed so much!  We've watched you grow from a virtually helpless tiny newborn into the "big" girl you are today who can sit and stand up, smile and laugh, and even talk!

You have quite the personality!  You are sweet and smart and friendly and fun and funny.

I like to refer to you as our little ray of sunshine, because you catch the attention of everyone you come in contact with.  You light up a room with your bright eyes and your smile, and your laugh- you love to laugh.  You really do bring cheer wherever you go. :)

You're saying a few words now- some that we can understand, and a whole bunch we can't. You said your first "real" word a few weeks ago.  We're pretty sure your first word was dog.  It sounds more like "dod," but you say it in reference to either Dakota or other dogs on the street, so we're pretty sure you mean dog.  You also started saying, "Hi!" for the first time that same weekend.  You now say it quite often, sometimes throwing in an accompanying wave for good measure. :)  You also say Dada and Dad.  Daddy gets a big kick out of this.  It's so cute!  A couple of your other favorite things to say are "Dis?" (This?) and "Dat?" (That?) while pointing at things.  You want to know what everything is.  So, of course, we tell you.  We spend a lot of time rattling off names of objects. ;)  You haven't gotten around to saying "Mama" yet, but that's okay.  You give me plenty of hugs now, which makes me so happy!

Although you don't say too many words yet, you definitely know many more.  You know where many things are around the house, such as pictures, flowers, the rocking chair, lamps, and the clock, and can pick them out or point to them when we ask you.  You can also show us where certain things are on your body, such as your head, hair, ears, eyes, teeth, tongue, shirt, pajamas, and most recently- your nose!

It's so much fun to watch as you learn new things.  We get so excited, and you seem so proud- as you should be!  You love looking at the pictures in your books and get definitely have your favorites.  You like playing peekaboo (aka: "Where's Lucy?"), and your latest trick is that you've learned how to clap.  Yay!  So much fun!

On one hand I feel a little weepy today, thinking about how you're not going to be my baby for too much longer.  On the other hand, it's so exciting to watch you grow and become more and more of your own person.  You bring so much joy to our lives each and every day.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl!  We love you more than we could ever have imagined and more than you could ever know.
