Easter festivities
(Two posts in one day- I know!)
There is always much holiday to-do around here, even in the days leading up to the actual holidays. This Easter has been no exception. Easter hasn't even happened yet, and Lucy has already participated in three egg hunts!
Egg Hunt #1: At Preschool. They had a party, and in addition, each child brought eight plastic eggs (we filled each one of Lucy's with a momster finger puppet), two hard-boiled eggs (to dye at school), and a basket (for the hunt). At pick-up, all the kids were super excited to show off the eggs they found and dyed (both of the eggs Lucy dyed were cracked- oops).
Egg Hunt #2: My favorite- our 3rd annual egg hunt with the gang. Yes, this is the third year we've done it, in the same park, with most of the same participants, including many siblings, and except for the addition of Gabby, and Addy was missing, since she and her family moved back to Maine late last summer. We each brought some eggs (Lucy filled ours with little bouncy balls), and we also brought some mac & cheese to contribute to the post-hunt picnic dinner.
This tradition makes me truly happy. It was at the first egg hunt that we met a few of these friends, so that makes it all the more special, now that we've all grown to be so close. Everyone had a blast!
I cherish the traditions we have built with our friends. It's crazy to look back and see how little they were that first year and how much they've grown over the years. It also reminds me, once again, how very lucky we are to have these friends in our lives. They are truly our extended family.
Egg Hunt #3: The neighborhood egg hunt. Because there are so many kids, the mom's group broke it down into three hunts, separated by age groups. Even with this consideration, it was a mad dash free for all (or, as Brian called it, "'Hunger Games' for kids." Ha! Good thing Lucy is a non-timid go-getter!
But don't think the Easter Eve fun stopped there, no way! This afternoon while Brian was out with a friend and Lucy and I were confined to the non-carpeted areas of our home (for the most part), we made lemonade out of lemons and spent some quality time together, in the kitchen, making baked tortilla chips and dyeing eggs.
I first got the idea to make baked tortilla chips after the St. Patrick's Day party at school, during which they made clover-shaped, green sprinkled tortilla chips in the toaster oven. She seemed to really like them, so I decided to try to make them at home. We had fun, and it even led to Lucy deciding that she likes tortillas, which led to Lucy trying and even liking quesadillas! (Take a moment to let that sink in- she likes a food!!) :) We don't have clover cookie cutters like they used at school, so we made hearts, stars, and I cut out the letters of Lucy's name.
So anyway, we had some leftover tortillas that I didn't want to go bad, plus we needed something to pass the time this afternoon, so I asked her if she wanted to make tortilla chips to take to Gramma and Grampa's house for Easter. She was all over it!
We still hadn't dyed any eggs, so after making chips, we rectified that situation. We had so much fun in our little, cramped kitchen this afternoon!
All this fun and Easter hasn't even come yet! You know what that means - more fun to come!
