21 months!
Dear Lucy,
The months seem to be going by faster and faster, and now you're 21 months old today! You are so cute, so much fun and so smart, we can hardly stand it!
There have been a couple of big developments as of late. One: You're teething again! Your four canines are coming in- all at the same time! But yay- the gaps between all your front teeth and your first molars will be filled! Once again, teething hasn't been too bad for you. You developed your first real (coughing) cold at around the same time, so I'm not sure which came first- the teething or the cold, but experiencing both of those things at once was definitely a double whammy. Runny nose, coughing, sneezing, teething...but, better to get it done all at once, right? We finally got a small humidifier, which we put in your room while you were sick and it seemed to help a lot. You were sad for a few days there, but you're all better now, and the teeth nubbins are poking through!
The other major development is a big accomplishment- you now sleep without your paci! It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment move on our part, and with hindsight, taking it away from you during teething was probably not the best timing- but it's been okay. You developed a rash around your mouth and I think sleeping with a pacifier in your mouth probably wasn't helping. I've been thinking about when to say 'bye-bye' to the paci (better sooner than later, I figured) anyway, so one night we just decided to not give it to you. Daddy explained to you that you didn't need it anymore because you're a big girl now. You were fine, and went to sleep. The next morning's nap was a totally different story. I put you down and instead of talking for a while like you normally do before falling asleep, you cried and called, 'Mommy" over and over. It was rough for both of us, but eventually you fell asleep. When you woke up and I went to get you, you grabbed onto your shirt (where your paci used to be clipped), and said, rather sadly, "Paci gone." i reiterated what Daddy told you the night before- that yes, the paci was gone because you're a big girl now. You seem to be having a slightly harder time falling asleep these days, but it's hard to tell if it's because of the lack of paci or the teething. In any case, you're not sleeping with it anymore, and we are SO proud of you!
The paci seems to have been replaced by all the friends who sleep with you in your crib now. Besides your lovey Elli ("Eyyi"), you also have to have Bunny ("Buh-eeh"), Nemo ("Meeno"), Elephant "Effant"), and last but not least, Grover ("Sah-puh-Govuh"). As a Grover fan myself, I find it especially endearing that you like to call him by his superhero name, even though he is not dressed in full Super Grover regalia. I guess it's a sign of respect.) :)
Here are some other things you're doing these days:
You have a new favorite fruit this week: nectarine ("neckie"). Although you still also ask for apple ("appo"), banana ("nana"), strawberries ("stawbees"), and melon ("meyn').
You still like noodles, and eggs and rice. As far as snacks go, you like: pretzels and crackers, of course, waffles "wuffles", and cereal bars.
At mealtimes, we sometimes sing songs. You will request your favorites, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star ("Twinkle Stah"), The Itsy Bitsy Spider ("Itsy Bits"), and Old MacDonald Had A Farm ("Ee-yi-o"). During the latter, you like to help clap our hands together. We sing the first part of the song and then pause for you to call out an animal, at which point you will say different animals like cow, pig, duck, and even lion ("yi-en"). Don't know of many lions on farms, but who's to say it couldn't happen!
You love watching Sesame Street (which you simply call "Elmo") and recognize many of the characters- Elmo, Zoe, Abby, Grover, Cookie Monster ("Cookie"), Ernie ("Uh-nie"), Bert ("Buwt"), and Big Bird ("Buwd"). Your new favorite is another PBS show called Word World (which you call "Duck"). Daddy has also introduced you to a few of his favorites, Pixar movies like the Toy Story series (simply referred to as "Woody Buzz"), and WALL-E ("Wah-bee"), and Up. You really enjoy watching these shows and movies, and I'm certain you're learning from them as well.
Now we only have to say a word to you once and you can pick it up right away. One such new word: sneakers ("see-kus"). You also continue to surprise us by saying words we didn't know you knew. Like last night, we gave you some asparagus for dinner, which you haven't had in a while, and right away you said, "aspa-gus"! In addition, you've been putting more and more two and three word sentences together, like "put on," "take off," "Daddy's home," "brush teeth", "shoes off,""sit down couch," or "turn the page", just to name a few. And you're fond of ending your own questions or statements with, "okay." For instance, when you want to watch Toy Story, you say, "Woody Buzz...okay." It's not entirely clear whether you're asking permission for something and then taking the liberty of answering for us, or pretending we're asking you if you want something and then answering. Either way, we get the idea. You want whatever it is. ;)
The cutest thing you've done in a while- recently before putting you in or after taking you out of your car seat, you reach around my neck and say, "Hug it" and then we hug. Today you added, "yuv-you". Love you too! :) And before I put you down for a nap, you come in close to my face and say "kiss it" then we'll kiss, then you say, "noses" (since you were little I would sometimes say, "noses" and we would rub noses, but now you say it!), and now you also add "eyes" and we flutter eyelashes, which makes you giggle. I'm not even sure where you came up with that one, since I don't recall ever doing that with you, but maybe, a long time ago.
A couple weeks ago you weren't even interested in story time before nap or bed time. You would just say, "Nap time!" and run toward your bedroom, then go to bed without a fuss. This week you're back to wanting story time, and you've been a little clingy before putting you down for naps. You seem to be okay at bed time- although then you sometimes make Daddy kiss all your friends goodnight, too, before leaving the room. (Which is too cute, by the way!)
You're just getting so big and you continue to amuse and amaze us each and every day! You're so sweet, lovable, and loving. You smile and laugh all the time, and you have a zest for life that is contagious- everything is exciting! You're just such a joy to spend time with.

We're a bit sad that "paci gone" too.
Actually, the way Mom described you waking up and saying that was rather heartbreaking. But, it's probably for the best. We love the daredevil look on your face when you do things like go down the slide. And also the serious studied look with your books.
