5 months!

Dear Lucy,

You're 5 months old!

Your 5th month birthday coincided with you sleeping without being swaddled for the first time. You've been swaddled to sleep since you were teeny tiny- this was for naps and at night. Over the last week you were fighting the swaddle more and more, kicking your legs out of the bottom, thereby waking yourself up, or not being able to fall asleep at all. In addition, you were starting to outgrow the swaddles we have for you. Rather than jerry rigging our own swaddle, we figured that might be a sign that it may be time to wean you off being swaddled entirely. I mean, it had to happen sometime, right? Can't be 10 years old and swaddled! You might be made fun of at sleepovers. ;)

So one night - when you weren't going to sleep anyway - we decided to unwrap you. First we tried putting you in one of those sleep sack things- long sleeves, but the bottom is a big sack. You kicked around a lot, like you would do in the swaddle. So then we tried footed pajamas next. Those worked better. Eventually, you fell asleep for the very first time without needing to be swaddled! Yay!

I should also mention that you also just started sleeping in...your big girl crib (gone is the co-sleeper)- woohoo! Yes, we bought you a crib and you started sleeping in it a couple days after you started sleeping in jammies. That was a few days ago, and although it's been sketchy, we haven't reverted back to the swaddle- not an option! You are fine at night (midnight feeding). We're able to put you into your crib while you're still awake, and you fall asleep without any problems! All the other times, however, not so smooth.

Which is totally understandable- it's a lot of change at once! First we take away your wrap, and then your little bed. Now you're able to flail your arms and kick around - and in a giant wasteland of a bed...it must be disconcerting! I hope you get the hang of it soon, because it's pretty exhausting - and sad - for both of us - when you cry and cry because you can't fall asleep. That said, you're doing a really good job, considering! I remind you all the time that you just need practice- the more you do it, the easier it will be. And I tell you all the time how good you're doing and how proud I am of you. And, this is a bonus- you look really darn cute in your feety jammies!

I think those are the big changes as of late. Besides that, you're still rolling around a lot - still just to your left side. (That's our girl- leaning to the left! ;) ) You're grabbing onto things a lot more- you like to touch and feel everything! Oh yeah, and you're putting everything into your mouth...your super drooly mouth! Your first tooth may not be far off. Although, I think babies normally do this crazy drooling thing for a while before cutting any teeth, so we'll just have to wait and see. :)

You don't stay on your back for long anymore, since you're more interested in rolling over...and over, and over. You spend a lot more time on your tummy these days.

Feeding time has gotten to be a little more of a challenge lately. You're so much more curious about your surroundings now, so you're easily distracted. I usually feed you in the bedroom (where it's darker and quieter), I can barely move or make a sound while you're eating, and neither can anyone else. Otherwise, you stop eating and want to look around instead, and then you start to get antsy. One thing you do sometimes while you're eating is stop, look up at me, say something (not sure what) and try to touch my face. I let that slide. :) You're also a speedy eater- about 10 minutes total on average per feeding. Sheesh! You take after Daddy in this respect- he's the fastest eater on the planet!

Another way you're taking after Daddy- watching football! Go Chargers!

Well, as always, the months go by in a flash, but also as always we can't wait to see what you'll be up to next. Next month you'll be a half of a year old! Crazy!

We love you, munchie munch!
